Hello!

I just need some clarifications on the process of applying for PR. Here goes.

I am Canadian, my BF (common law by now) is from Central America. He already has a Multiple Entry TRV valid until 2018. Next time we go to Canada in a few months, we plan to start the process for PR. I will be his sponsor. We will also apply for the Open Work Permit, which from my understanding should be issued within a few months of application being submitted. My question is, since the TRV allows him to be in Canada for 6 months at a time, does he have to leave after every 6 months while waiting for the PR? Or on the other hand is he obliged to stay in Canada while his application is being processed?

Thanks in advance!! :)

If you apply INLAND and submit OWP at the same time, he has implied status during the entire process so no need to renew anything. He would get the OWP after 4-5 months of applying. With an inland app he should plan not to leave Canada at all during the entire processing time (2+ years).

If you apply OUTLAND the processing will probably be much quicker, and he can come and go from Canada as he likes with the multiple entry TRV. Of course there is no OWP associated with an outland app so he can just stay in Canada as a visitor in this case.

This was so helpful! Thank you! :)

I have another concern if you don't mind.. I am unsure I would be approved as a sponsor. The reason being, I've been spending a lot of time here in Central America with my significant other. For that reason, I have not had a stable job/income for almost 2 years. I do have about 30K in savings in a bank account in Canada, not sure that would suffice. Otherwise I do not have a criminal record, bankrupcy and all that jazz. Thoughts? What are my chances of being approved as a sponsor?

You shouldn't have a problem. As long as you aren't bankrupt or on welfare, it's generally not a problem. Just show them that you have a plan to support yourselves. Savings are a good start. If you have been employed in the past or have job prospects in Canada, that would also help.

Thank you! That makes me feel better :p

This might seem like a broad general question.. But what is the success rate for PR application? Given my BF already has a TRV, no red flags were found during that application, should it be relatively simple? He also speaks fluent English, and a bit of French if that helps.

It varies by VO. I think somewhere around 80% are approved, with some VOs being around 90 and others lower.

The success rate depends on several things, such as red flags, criminality, and proof of relationship. If you've been together for a while and your relationship has followed a "standard" route, then you shouldn't have too many problems.

Nobody can guarantee an approval, or provide a success rate percentage, but it sounds like he should have a pretty straightforward application.

One thing you need to do, if you apply abroad, is to show CIC that you will return to Canada after the PR has been approved. This can be in the form of a job offer, proof of housing (even if you'll be staying with family/friends initially), etc., because CIC wants to know that you will return to Canada with your sponsored partner.

Really great advice, thank you!

As for me returning to Canada with him, most definitely! The plan is for me to get pregnant in the next few months if all goes well and start a family in Canada. I am assuming that me being pregnant and wanting the child to be born in Canada would be sufficient evidence that I will be returning. I will of course provide medical evidence and letters from doctors/midwife. Along with support evidence from my family/friends.
