Hi Everyone,

I am a US Citizen and I married a Canadian 2 months ago and have been in Canada with him as a visitor. I haven't been able to change my name on my passport since I am in Canada visiting. Should I be using my MAIDEN name or MARRIED name on the immigration papers? If I use my married name, will my marriage cert be enough proof of who I am although my passport has my maiden name on it? Hope you all can help!

Thanks a bunch!

Bettina

You must use whatever name is on your passport. In your case, your maiden name.

Thanks for the quick reply. So once the name on the passport is changed I can just send CIC the updated info and they will change it?

Depending on how soon you want to mail your application, it may be easier to just leave your maiden name on your passport and other government documents until the process is over. I am not sure the process exactly on changing it throughout the immigration process.

I wouldn't recommend changing your name in the midst of the application process. It might get confusing. If you're using your maiden name on the application, don't change it legally until after your PR is approved.

If you want to use your married name throughout, you will have to change your documents (passport, etc.) to reflect the change. You should do this before submitting an application.

Whichever you choose will be fine - it shouldn't have any effect on the application itself.

Your inbox is full now the bailey so here is the link you need to make an appointment ok http://www.consular.canada.usembassy.gov/calgary.asp

thanks a bunch! why is it that an inbox can only hold 2 messages? weird. heh. thanks for your help

I used my married name on all documents although my passport is in my maiden name and didn't have any problems at all. Good luck no matter what you decide to do :)
