My wife is due to join a University this fall (September) in Vancouver British columbia, Can any body help me with ideas on the best form of accomodation should she be in, should she bei n the students hostels or homestay atleast for the first year? Which is the best accomodation for a new student and one that is economical. Any suggestions? And I would also want to know how much money in CAD should she land with for her upkeep considering we have already paid all the tution fees for one semester.

1. Well if she is going to UBC or SFU she could have applied for student housing. There is no student hostels. She can try Kiiji or Craigslist Vancouver for a listing of housing/apt/shared accom/homestay to see what is available.
2. She need to show $10K for living expenses and about $2K for travel expenses. plus 2nd semester fee.

British columbia is considered here as the most expensive city .
homestay in Ontario and Nova Scotia is usually from $700 + /month ,also depends on the area if u live nearby university its a little more than that if u live too far it can be a little cheaper.so expect more than that in BC.
otherwise if she choses to live in shared accomodation (share one apartment/condo etc) private room ,i'll be atleast $400/month and in good area $500/month (plus u need to pay first month and last month (as deposit) in advance.

lived for two years

Is there any advantage of home stay over student housings other than monetary? And how much would a student expect to spend per month in vancouver, ofcourse I know this depends more or less on lifestyle but am asking here on a monthly average?

you'll merge in the society easily and will pass through the cultural shock period smoothly.
your language skills will improve ,and u'll know more about the western culture and how to interact with them ,as u'll be dealing with people in day to day life.
there are really good families out there who are cooperative and really supportive ,they will really take care of you.
