I have a job lined up for me in BC right now if i decide to go the work visa route, but i would rather my wife sponsor me to live there instead because i don't know anything about a work visa and how long it will take. how long does it take for me to be able to stay with my wife while the paperwork is processing for the spousal sponsorship? i can live with her once its started but how long after i start it can i move? also which is more expensive?

Generally sponsoring is faster because they want to reunite family members, but this is very dependent on your home country. Check out the processing times http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/index.asp as they do change regularly.

I should have added as these links can be confusing. You first should look under inland application. Sponsorship it currently taking 38 days based on that website, but we (in the month of September) are seeing around 27 days on average. Then go to outland applications and go to applications for permanent residents, which varies a great deal depending on which country you are residing in. Click on "family class: partners and spouses" which will show you the current processing time for each country. This is on top of what you'll wait for your sponsorship application to be approved in Mississauga (assuming you're applying outland). Once your sponsorship application is approved then CIC will send it to your outland Canadian immigration office.

If you apply for permanent residency without the help of your spouse click on "skilled worker received after November 28 2008" and that will show you the current processing times.

On a personal note, I have had friends that have come over as skilled workers to Ontario and it took a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 1.5 years. But this is in the last 10 years! Also, they were coming from the UK as farmers and a speech therapist.

Hope this helps.

I forgot about inland. Any questions ask this forum. http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/inland-applications-2010-t48144.0.html this is assuming that you want to be with your spouse during the processing period. I have a feeling if you are together CIC won't look at you as a priority because you are already together. And an outlander they want to reunite family members so they'll pop you to the top of the pile of applications. However, this is through word of mouth only! Again, the processing times under "application processed in Canada" will give you an idea of present waiting times.

Good luck!

us citizen, and i have a couple more questions if you could, i don't have much time to look things up. if i apply from the US can i still move up right away? What do i say crossing the border if i am going file from in Canada?

Firstly, border guards generally can see through a liar so it is best to tell the truth. Saying that, the more details you give them the more questions they will ask. Since you cannot legally work in Canada I would just say that you are visiting your wife. They will most likely ask for how long so it'll have to be below the max allowable time that a US citizen can visit Canada. Since you are applying as an outlander, I am guessing that you will have to go back when your PR comes through in order to submit your passport to the Buffalo office so that they can stamp it. I think the waiting time for family applications in the States is pretty fast. There is a Buffalo subject on this forum that will be able to help you out more. I would highly recommend you ask this question to them as those individuals have already gone through it. I'm speaking for my hubby going through the UK which may be different.

Hope this helps...but please check out the Buffalo forum...they will be able to help you out more.

Bonne Chance :)

I don't know the answer to this so just putting it out there as a question. If you have been offered a job in Canada and your company is sponsoring the work visa wouldn't that be faster? (a matter of months). Is it just the same process as going through the skilled worker category with no job offer?

Just wondering if this was a faster route to start the job, move legally across the border and then apply for the PR as an inland application with time not being so much of an issue?

Just a thought to look into. Good luck.
