Hey guys,
My girlfriend and I are 22 and 23 years old. We're laying out a 5-7 year plan to move to Canada once we build up skills, savings, and life experience. We're thinking about moving to Calgary since I've lived there for 6 months in the past and somewhat familiar with the city, although it is pretty expensive. I'll have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology at the end of next semester, and my girlfriend may or may not have an Associate's by the time we're ready to apply. She has a high school diploma highest, and not sure about her goals yet. As of right now, she wants to train service animals for psychological patients.
My field is in Information Technology, and I have entry-level experience right now but by the time I move I'll have some certifications under my belt. I'm still deciding which route (security, networking, or sysadmin) I'd like to go to, but definitely diving deeper into the field before applying for jobs. We have connections in Calgary that could house us temporarily until we get settled, personal friends of mine for 8 years.
I am diagnosed Schizoaffective Bipolar type, but it's currently under control with combined therapy and use of Abilify. I feel I am more than capable of living abroad, although when I studied abroad 2 years ago (prior to my diagnosis) I self-admitted myself to an overnight suicide watch stay which I was then evaluated as safe to go home. I'm not sure if that medical hospital record would affect me.
We're thinking about moving once we (combined) have 40k USD that'd convert favorably to CAD when the USD is stronger. We'd rent a 1 bedroom, size doesn't matter. I want to sell my car and rely on the Ctrain for our public transit needs, since my girlfriend doesn't drive it'd help the both of us as well.
Would Express Entry be the path for us? Originally, I was going to study in Canada again but it costs a pretty penny. My girlfriend may get in with a student visa because she's interested in studying in Canada. Could we enter the country at the same time if she gets a student visa to live and work in Canada/build skills and I go for Express Entry? We're assessing our options.
Thanks!
