Hi

My family and I lived in Canada from 1968 - 1978 I went to school and worked for a short time. We had landed immigrant status. I was engaged to a Canadian we split up and my family came back to England. We are back in touch and we got engaged in September. We want to know where do we start regarding my application to move back to Canada. He cant move to the UK as his parents are elderly and not very well.

Any information - help you can give would be greatly appreciated

Kindest Regards

First thing's first. He can sponsor you to come to Canada if you are his spouse or common-law partner. There's also a conjugal partner category, but that is better avoided. In order to qualify as a common-law partner, you would've had to have lived together for at least 1 year, which I believe is not the case. So first you need to be either a common-law partner or a spouse, there is no fiance category.

Second. These are the forms you will need: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/fc.asp
Your partner will fill out the sponsorship application. You will do the medical exam, get the police checks and fill out the permanent residency application. You will pay the application fees ($1040 if you have no children coming with you to Canada) and fill out the receipt. Then one of you will send all of that in one package to Mississauga. Mississauga will open it in about a month (processing times can change in the future), approve sponsorship (or if something is wrong, reject it, but it's unlikely) and transfer your application to London. London will process it for some months (currently 2-8 months) and when you're done, they will ask you to submit your passport and put the visa in it.
Of course, there's all sorts of complications possible during the process (like an interview), but that's how it usually goes.

When applying, you will be asked to submit evidence that your relationship is genuine. Meaning anything you have to show you're in a relationship - photos together, cards, letters, emails, chat logs, phone bill, boarding passes, letters to family mentioning your relationship etc etc. You can start collecting this now.

That's the gist of it. I'm sure you'll have more specific questions when you get down to doing the forms ;) Good luck!
