Hi,

I would appreciate if someone could help. I first came to canada in dec 2008 as a student, applied for my pr in april 2012, which apparently got refused, applied it again in july 2012 and landed as an immigrant in august 2013, now my question is, for how long i have to wait to apply for the citizenship.

Thanks in advance.

You'll have to wait until at least August 2015.

To qualify to apply you must have 1095 days of residency in Canada (over the last four years) and two years (730 days) out of those 1095 days must have been accumulated after you became a PR. Each day before you became a PR only counts as half a day for citizenship residency purposes.

This means that if you have been in Canada since August 2011 and haven't left Canada for even one day - AND you remain in Canada until August 2015 without leaving for evey one day - then you will be able to apply for citizenship sometime in August 2015. Otherwise you will have to wait longer.

thanks for your really helpful response,

Additionally you can use the Citizenship day calculator to figure this out... you can put a future date, along with your days here as a student. It will give you a date in the future that you are eligible to apply. One thing though, it is not advisable to apply as soon as you hit 1095 days. If there is a mistake your application may get rejected. It is advisable to wait another 30 days or so before submitting your application. Good luck!

Check the cic.gc.ca page for the calculator!

What status did you hold between your studies ending to actual landing? Did you remain in Canada during this period including post the initial refusal? Note that the Non PR time is capped at 1 year so at a half a day credit you would need 2 years of Non PR time and 2 years of PR time consecutively to get to 1095 days as your fastest timeline to application. You would apply on day 1096. Note that the relevant 4 year window is always moving forward by one day each day so depending on your absences in Canada you may or may not have to replace 1 x missing day with 1 or more y presence days.
