My future husband (FH) is Canadian living in Canada and I am American living in New York. Our wedding date is in October and it is here in NY. How long should we wait to apply? FH is going to apply from Canada. I am in my second semester of grad school. We wish to live in Canada, since FH has no intention of ever living here. I just checked the time frame for the processing of the application and it said 12 months. I wish to be out of here before 2020. If our goal is to be physically living with each other by the end of 2019 should he apply at the beginning of 2019? Any advice is helpful. Also once we are married and he applies for spousal sponsorship, can we still visit each other?

American outland apps average around 6 months or less right now, so if you are planning for end of 2019, you are a few years early. Check back with the forum in 2018 to see what the processing times are at that point and plan accordingly.

You should have no issues visiting each while the sponsorship app is in process.
