Has the employer obtain an approved LMO (labour market opinion)? If not, then the next step is for the employer to obtain an approved LMO:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/employers/lmo-basics.asp

Once the LMO is approved, you can enter Canada with the job offer and approved LMO and obtain a work permit upon entering the country. You can then start working. Information about applying for a work permit at the border is here:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/apply-who-eligible.asp

Note that obtaining an approved LMO can take a few months (and there's no guarantee of approval). So don't make any travel plans until the approved LMO has been secured by your furture employer.

Thank you so much for your prompt and very informative reply. I really appreciate it.
The whole thing has been a bit of a whirlwind.
Cheers

No problem. Come back and let us know if you have any more questions. And congrats on the job.
