Hi All,

I've recently landed in Canada. All is going well, however there is one problem i'm being warned of by (almost) everyone; to add surname to my official documents.

Actually, my full name is marked as 'Given Names' in my passport (for my entire family). In my PR records, Canadian Immigration instructed me to use full name as 'Surname' and don't use First name. Here in Canada, almost everywhere we need both full name and Surname (for example, admitting kids to school needs both names). I'm thinking of adding Surname in my documents. Does anyone has such experience or know anyone who has added surname after landing in Canada? I need the process required and its impact on PR status.

Thank you for your help in advance.

I faced the similar problem in USA. I am assuming you are from India, so you need to change both in Indian as well as Canadian records. Below are the things I did:

1. Requested Indian consulate to issue me a new passport with the new name. Since your full name including your surname is mentioned in the given name, consulate will do it 6-7 days.
2. Check the process of name change in Canada. I followed the below steps for doing this in USA:
a. Give ad in USA local paper that I am changing my name.
b. went to police station for clearance that I am not changing my name to escape from some fraud.
c. went to USA court to apply for name change
d. Received the name change court order
e. I used this court order to change the name everywhere i.e. SSN number (SIN in canada), driving license etc.
f. this court order also helps you in case of any issue arising in future.

Hope this helps!!!

Thank you, rajesh_arr !!! Yes, I'm from India.

I want to add a surname with my kids too, does this process needs to be done for each of the family member? Any help will be appreciated.

Regards

Yes I did that for all the family members though steps would be different for wife and kids. Please make sure to get new Indian Passports. And most important thing is to get Canadian Court Order for name change or have some Canadian Govt documents that shows that you change your name from X to Y. Pl check local Canadian laws related to name change.
