hello, I am a canadian who will be soon flying to california to drive with my wife back to canada. I have the marrage certificate, the recipt from the PR application and a letter from my employer to show I can support us, so they will let us in giveing my wife a visitor status. My question is do I need to buy a two way ticket or can I just be up front at customs on the way down, and just show them the paperwork I will show them on the way back in, Thanks

Is she a US Citizen ? if she is she wont have any problems getting in Canada. Just do like other persons do tell the Customd officer she is coming to visit you (US citizens are visa exempted). In the other hand if she is not a US citizen she will probably will have some sort of issue trying to get any status in Canada (is really common) entry might be denied.

Good luck

It shouldn't really be a problem, but....

Definitely be up front with customs otherwise you are risking serious misery in the future. If they find you lying she could even be barred from entry into Canada for one year or maybe even longer. What they hate worst is lying.

It's easier for U.S. citizens, that's true, but she is still on a visit for now. Although they know she intends to stay if she's approved, she has to have the means and intention to return if she's denied PR for some unknown reason. So they want to make sure that she has ties to the U.S. (job, family responsibilities, property to look after, etc.) and that she is able to go back there if the PR application fails. They have to be satisfied that she will not be trapped in Canada if something goes wrong.
