What to do for a Study permit while on an SOWP

I'm here on my husbands TWP, we have applied for our PR via CEC and I would like to do a one year course at the local college. I called the college and they said as long as I have an open work permit I can study and not be classed as an international student. My question is if I apply for a study permit would I loose my open work permit? I would still like the option of being able to work part time while studying. I am not in employment at the moment. Is this possible or what would happen?
 
The school is wrong and following their instructions will get you in trouble with CIC. You can't study while on an open work permit. You will need to apply for a study permit since the program you are planning on taking in longer than six months. Yes - you will lose the open work permit once the study permit is approved. Depending on the school you attend, you may be able to work up to 20 hours a week while studying full time.
 
Thanks for your reply. The college didn't say I could study on an open work permit they only said that because I have one I won't be classed as an international student and have to pay extra. I will be a normal student and pay the regular fees. The course I am going on has an optional co-op at the end of the year. Would it say on the study permit that I am allowed to work? Should I apply for the course first then apply for the study permit or permit first then course? Thanks.
 
You'll need to be accepted by the school before you can apply for a study permit. Note that it's too late to apply for a study permit for studies that start in September. So the soonest you'd be able to start classes is January.

I believe it was the first week of August. You can still try. But you will need to apply for the course first and be accepted by the school before you will even be able to submit the study permit application. So you're most likely too late given it's already mid August. Also, make sure your school is on the Designation Learning Institutions list (you can find this list on the CIC web site). CIC has recently changed its study permit rules and will now only issue study permits to schools on the DLI list.

Were you able to able to apply for you study permit while you were on work permit?
