LANDED..........
25-04-2011
Okay, so I crossed the border from Canada to America this afternoon with the intention of importing my car. Because I knew there was a possibility that I would be asked to weight 72 hours I books a hotel room not far from the border (and because I know the car has to be in the states while they are doing that paperwork). I tried to find the fax number where I need to fax my stuff but couldn't so I called. The woman gave me some new info that I was unaware of.

She said that because my car is being financed at the moment I need something called a "certified screen print" along with a letter from my bnk saying I can export it. I have the letter and registration and the title that they gave me to register the car, which is not the actual title, I guess a sort of temporary title. But she insisted I need this certified screen print. Now here's the thing, she didn't seem to be able to tell me what it was and I cannot find any info on this ANYWHERE! I want to get this done and faxed off ASAP so I can cross on thursday and land and export my car at the same time (I have the hotel room until Thursday).

My next question. I am in my car, which is registered in Ohio. If I want to land before I import my car can I?

What you need is proof from the lender that they will allow the car to be exported. See: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/trade/basic_trade/export_docs/motor_vehicle.xml

Documentation required

For U.S. Titled Vehicles

Vehicles issued an original certificate of title. For used, self-propelled vehicles issued, by any jurisdiction in the United States, a Certificate of Title or a Salvage Title that remains in force, the owner must provide to Customs the original Certificate of Title or a Certified Copy of the Certificate of Title and two complete copies of the original Certificate of Title or the Certified Copy of the original.

Where title evidences third-party ownership/claims. If the used, self-propelled vehicle is leased or a recorded lien exists in the U.S., in addition to complying with paragraph (b)(1)(i) of this section, the provisional owner must provide to Customs a separate writing from the third-party-in interest which expressly provides that the subject vehicle may be exported. This writing must be on the third-party's letterhead paper and contain a complete description of the vehicle including the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), the name of the owner or lienholder of the leased vehicle, and the telephone numbers at which that owner or lienholder may be contacted and must bear an original signature of the third-party and state the date it was signed.

I have that, but when I called just now, they said I ALSO needed something called a certified screen print. Should I just fax it to them anyway?

I don't think they are going to answer, you replied to a 4 year old post.

Unless you are able to refinance your car on a personal loan type of setup it is likely you won't find a financier anywhere that will allow you to export the vehicle with an active lien. The reasoning is that once the car is out of the county if you decide to bounce on the payments they have very little to no recourse to get the vehicle back or to make you pay for it. Best of luck

Yeah, I am looking into personal loans. Problem is they have a higher APR :( Not sure if it's even worth it... But then, we also don't want to give it up :(
Does anyone know if they would give us a personal loan showing employment in Canada (no longer employed in the US) :(

Your spouse has no credit in Canada? Have you tried looking at Canadian loans?

Else I'd buy a used cheap car until you build some credit. Regardless, if you get a US personal loan, buy the car in Canada, importing is a hassle and car prices in the US are not any better for used anyways.

You can't have any kind of lien or any type of money owed, nor can you use the car as collateral on a loan if you want to export it. Has to be cash clear. Also you can't export salvage vehicles.

Thank you! No, no credit in Canada as we both just recently arrived (we are both US citizens). I understand that we must own the car so an unsecured personal loan would be the only way. I know importing the car is a hassle, but what else can we do with it? just keep paying for it and buy another one here? that may end up being more expensive than just getting a higher APR loan...

Oh I totally missed the second part of your first comment, that you already have the car. So there's no way to sell it to recoup the money huh?

well since we are still paying for it, selling it may not be an option. I think we could short-sell, but then again lose money in the process. We love the car, so the higher APR again may make more sense.
Now the issue is getting a loan in the US while working abroad (we still have a residence/address in the US) :/
