Hello Everyone,

I’m a US citizen who has been officially accepted into a MA/PhD program at York University in Toronto beginning in September 2022. I am currently applying for a study permit. My girlfriend (also American) will be coming to Canada with me and needs a work permit. We are unmarried but will be considered a common-law partnership as of June 2nd, 2022. We would like to move to Canada when the lease on our American apartment ends in July.

Here is where I am confused - I'm filling out form IMM1294 for a study permit, and it asks me to declare my relationship status. The form will not allow me to input June 2nd 2022 as the start date of my common-law partnership because future dates are not considered a valid response. However, I've heard that we will need to prove our relationship status in order for her to accompany me to Canada on a work permit.

So, what should we do? If I declare myself as single, would that be considered misleading information and grounds for rejecting my application (because I will be in a common-law relationship one month into app processing)? Would writing "single" now and changing it later delay the processing of my application and jeopardize my program start date? I'm also worried that writing my status as "single" now might somehow harm her chances of getting a work permit later.

As for possible solutions, can I wait until June 2nd to submit the application for my study permit, or is that too late? I'm pretty nervous that submitting in early May is already pushing "too late," considering that it takes a few months to process applications and the program starts in early September.

How do we establish our common-law partnership for her work permit if I declare myself as single on the study permit?

Thanks in advance for your help!
