hello, I've been reading posts on this forum and I keep seeing people talking about landing. what does it mean? I have not applied for anything because I still need to establish common law relationship, but will technically be landing to visit in july hah. sorry, i'm just a bit confused and would like to understand the timelines better ???

"Landing" means that you have applied for PR, your application has been approved, your PR visa issued AND you have gone through the process of arriving in Canada (or visiting the local visa office) to activate your PR visa and officially become a permanent resident.

So when you become a PR if you already live in Canada, do you need to cross the border and re-enter to officially "land" and get it activated?

Depends.

If you've applied inland, you'll have a quick interview at your local CIC office at the end of which you will have landed.

If you've applied outland, you'll have to leave and re-enter. Most people do this by driving to the US and coming right back in. This is called flagpoling, because you're basically twirling around the flagpole and coming back where you started.

By the way, the language you're using concerns me. You can not just move to Canada without status. And you especially can't tell the CBSA that you're moving here to live. Don't show up here looking like you're moving permanently. Expect trouble if you do.

Depends if you filed as inland or outland. Inland makes an appointment at a visa office. If you filed outland, you can "flagpole", which essentially means you go to the border, exit to the US side and then come straight back into Canada to "land".

I'm a Canadian Citizen, I was born here and already live here. My partner is making arrangements to come here on a one year SWAP visa, and after one year will apply for visitor status. We will then send in our PR application and during the processing time she will extend her visitor status so she can remain here legally. Only after she has landed will we start bringing her possessions here, etc. Does that help with your concerns?

Just to add - for those already in Canada and applied "outland", they have the option to book an appointment to "land" in a local office if they do not wish to flagpole. How soon you get an appointment may depend on when your PR visa expires(i.e. the last date you must land by) and if you are quite far away from the nearest border.

Yes.

Please understand there are plenty of people who come on here and assume they can just turn up at the border and sort out this immigration stuff later.
