Pretty much just asking this question for reassurance.

I have been living in Mexico the past 2 years and not working. Can I be denied to sponsor because j have had no income? I have never been on social assistance, I have been supporting myself with my savings and of course my husband has been supporting me while living abroad as well. What are the main reasons why someone would be denied to sponsor?

From my experience as an applicant (my husband is Canadian), the sponsor needs to maintain employment. There doesn't seem to be a minimum income required, though.

What if you live outside of the country and cannot work? I have not worked for 2 years... So does that mean I am going to be denied to sponsor my husband? I am fully able to sponsor my husband as I am going back Canada in April which will be about 5 months before he comes (depending on application process) to save more money and get things established(this was mentioned in our application

There is absolutely NO REQUIREMENT to be employed. None whatsoever. My wife was my sponsor, she hasn't worked in years, and it was no issue at all. You can't be on social assistance, which you are not, and you can't be in bankruptcy.

I really wouldn't know. I think you, the sponsor, need to be residing in Canada, though. Your husband can remain in his country; the outland application is processed much more quickly.

I completely understand your worry. I'm in the midst of immigrating, too, and it's terrifying. Your best bet may to be to call the CIC tomorrow morning to ask for advice.

The sponsor only needs to be in Canada if they are a PR and not a citizen. A Canadian citizen can sponsor a spouse while living abroad.

Thank you!!! Makes me feel better!!!

I thought the exact same because I have many friends who have gone through the same process.... And none of them lived in Canada or worked... They all lived with their spouse in their country. Thank you !!!

My application was received at cic in mississauga on May 12, 2016 and I still have not been approved as a sponsor. I'm super frustrated. I called cic and all they said to me was that if I haven't heard by September 19 to call back. I personally know 2 others that applied after me and there files are now in havana. I have no idea what the delay is. Any ideas as to why a denial would be given to someone? I live in Canada and I'm sponsoring my husband who lives in cuba.

Only thing you have to demonstrate is you intend on living in Canada. Should show proof of job searches, house/rental searches, letter from parents saying they will support u, etc

it's anyone's guess why it's taking a longer time than others. there can be many factors. reasons for sponsors being rejected generally are related to: bankruptcy, welfare or charges/conviction of domestic violence. a sponsor is not going to be rejected solely because of income/unemployment.

I haven't worked for over 2 years and got approved as a sponsor. Though I do have income and savings from my investments.

I have been at the same job for 17 years, so I'm not worried about the income/unemployment part. I guess all I can do is wait :(
