Hello everyone,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place or a repeated topic, basically years ago I started a long distance relationship with a girl from Ontario who I have since met, spent a lot of time with, and got engaged to I am wanting to move to Ontario from the United Kingdom to be with her and was hoping someone could offer some advice on the best way to go about this?

I work full time as a remote sales representative for one of the big web hosting companies (US based) I live and work from the United Kingdom and manage my pay as if I am self-employed, I have no criminal record or dealing with the police, I do have a poor credit history dating back to my early teens, I am 23

I also read somewhere that you can come to Canada and live in Canada for 6 months is this true?

I am in the early stages of researching this so really just looking for opinions on my eligibility, advise, and maybe some direction

Thank you in advance!

What you can do as a UK citizen is visit for up to 6 months but you can not work or study. Another thing you can do, being the right age is to apply for a working holiday visa when the program opens up again in the new year. You can read more about that here: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/united_kingdom-royaume_uni/experience_canada_experience/index.aspx This would give you a one year open work permit. You can apply again a year later in order to get a 2nd year. If you end up living with your girlfriend as a couple for at least 12 months, she would be able to sponsor you for permanent residency in Canada which would give you basically all the rights of a citizen except to vote.

Thank you for your response Leon, could I ask I understand you said I would be unable to work? currently in the UK as stated I work remote technically as if I would if I was self employed from a home office

All I require to do my job is a connection and a laptop, could I continue to do this within the 6 months? without breaking any rules

Yes, as a visitor, you would be able to work remotely in the UK as long as you don't tell anybody. Technically you are not working in Canada because you are working remotely for a UK company but physically you are staying in Canada and you are working so it is kind of a grey area.

However, 6 months is just to visit and if you want to immigrate, you either need to marry your gf so she can sponsor you or you have to manage to live together for 12 months so she can sponsor you as a common law.
