My aunt and uncle moved back to the UK after living in Canada for over 30 years. They have been back over 5 years now and have not managed to settle. Both are retired and have close family back in Canada who they are missing. They moved back for various reasons but it's not worked out and they are very unhappy. Is there any hope of them being able to move back and what would the process be due to their age?

What was their status when they left Canada? Citizens? Permanent residents? We need more information.

I believe they never renewed PR status so has now expired

They were PRs in Canada for 30 years and never got citizenship?

Well if they were both PRs when they left Canada, then they no longer meet the residency obligation (staying in Canada 2 out of every 5 years). So when they try to return now to Canada, there is a good chance they will be reported for not meeting the residency obligation and will have their PR status revoked.

If even one of them got Canadian citizenship, then as long as they were living together they would be ok and could return and keep PR status easily.

It's extremely important you find out if one or both of them became citizens. If so, coming back won't be an issue. If not, they would have to immigrate again from scratch - which is very unlikely to be feasible at their age.

If they are from the UK, why can't they just return to Canada on their passports, then meet the residency obligation? Or, will they get ID'd as PR's by the CBSA? If they get caught, they can appeal the case. If they show many ties to Canada they might be able to successfully appeal it.
