Hi,

I fall under the Skilled Worker category and have British nationality. I have over 5 years of experience in my field of work (Software Engineering). Can someone please tell me what the best way forward is to find a job in Canada? Do i go there first and then look for a job or do i apply for jobs on the internet and try to secure offers?

It's hard to get a job through the internet. You can try it but it would probably be easier for you to go there on holiday and try to do interviews.

thanks for the reply. I understand that it is difficult to find a job from the internet even if you have the skills. Most employers just don't want the hassle. I just completed the following test

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/assess/index.asp

and i managed to pass it with 67 points (an employment offer would make it 77+). I also have more than enough funds to show that i can support myself while i am there.

My main question is, in what way can i go to Canada and look for a job. Do i come on a holiday and look for a job? Leon: I would have thought that a visitor visa disallowed people from seeking employment or is the restriction on actually working while on visitor visa.

So Basically, what type of visa do i need to look for a job in Canada?. What type of visa do i need to actually work in Canada.

You can look for jobs on visit visa, you just can't work. The employer would need to apply for an AEO if you want to use it to help you immigrate, say for FSW or LMO if they want to get you a temporary work permit. See http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/workplaceskills/foreign_workers/supperimm.shtml for more info. Some larger employers may already have LMO's but they would have to apply to get your name on it which takes less time. Once you have an LMO, you just take it to the border and apply for a work permit, cost $150. You can also check if you fall into one of these: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/special-tech.asp IT specialties because if you do, you will not need an LMO, just take the job offer to the border and apply for the work permit.
