Waiting for medical - Passport Expiring

I have nomination from Saskatchewan. Medicals will take at least until December 2016. But my passport expires in May 2017.
I have heard that passport should have at least 6 months on it when they ask for passport stamping.

Before they ask for it, I am going to renew the passport beforehand. Now the question is: should I send them the renewed passport myself, or should I wait for their request for renewal?
What will be more time-saving?

renew the passport and send CES updating them about the new passport details.
