Hi.
I am eligible to CERB and I am residing in Montreal as a permanent resident.

I am planning to visit Korea because my kids' school closed and we can spend time with our family in Korea. We plan to be back in mid of August.
In this case, can I still get CERB?

Does anyone know about the meaning of 'residing in Canada'?

I 've been trying to call CRA but the line is busy all the time.

Please help me with this.

Thank you in advance.

All temp and permanent residents can apply, the other criteria about having earned 5000 last year and loosing your job is what determines illegibility. Residing in Canada means you live in Canada as your primary residence right now.

'Residing in Canada' means tax residency. Did you pay taxes in Canada for 2019 and do you intend to pay taxes in Canada for 2020? If you answered yes to both, you are eligible.

Thank you. I did pay tax and will pay tax because I live and work here. Very clear now! Thank you again~

There has been nothing published to clarify if it is physical residency or tax residency, so there is no guarantee that you qualify.

Don’t agree either with this interpretation of residing in Canada. This is what the instruction says. The whole point of the benefit is to provide some for of income for those who do not qualify for unemployment insurance. The money is supposed to go towards basic needs in Canada.

To receive these benefits you are supposed to be out of work due to covid but like other unemployment benefits you should be prepared to return to work once the government opens again. This isn’t a vacation pay. If you do want to go to South Korea I would not take the CERB. If you are travelling you aren’t truly out of work due to covid 19 and self isolating in Canada o4 taking care of your children in Canada while they are off from school. Would also think that you may struggle to get a flight to South Korea or enter the country. You will certainly be quarantined which may not be at your family home and may not be free. Keep calling the CRA.
