Hello i wanted to know what it takes to apply for a visitor visa? I am from canada and my friend from punta cana wants to come and visit me.i invited him for a few months.what do we need please?

Unless he has extensive previous travel, a trip of a few months is far too long and will likely make IRCC concerned he has plans on remaining in Canada long term. He should request a trip of 2-3 weeks maximum.
He should demonstrate that he can pay for the trip himself.
There are no black and white answers to your questions. How long he is allowed into Canada is always up to the CBSA officer he speaks to at the border. He needs to make sure it doesn't look like he's trying to live in Canada without authorization.
I would recommend that you dedicate a few hours to reading through the posts in the Visitors section of the forum so that you can understand more about the application process and common refusal reasons.
If he can't demonstrate he has the ability to financially support himself for the length of the trip he intends to take. Then his application is almost certainly going to be rejected.
