So I'm from the states and i've been in canada living with my girlfriend trying to get common law status. My 6 months as a visitor is up in a month and I need to apply for an extension.

What kinds of things should I include in my application. Do we need to provide proof of financial stability? My GF works and takes care of my expenses and I have parents who could help me out in any sort of emergency or provide me with a plane ticket back home if necessary.

Any other tips or advice?? What have your experiences been and how long does it usually take?

Should I wait till just a few days before my 6 months are up or do it now a month in advance?

Yes, you need to include proof of finances. You can show your partner's payslips/bank statements and a letter from her explaining she is supporting you.

Explain that you will be applying for sponsorship once you are common-law and ask for a one year extension.

Extensions take around 4 months right now. You should apply a few weeks before your current status expires.

We are gonna use my GF's bank statements to provide proof of financial support. And also get a letter from my parents explaining they would support me in emergencies. Do we need to provide multiple bank statements or just one showing total amount??
