Good day, everyone. My boyfriend and I are planning to meet in Canada in the next few months. He’s American though, and we have not met each other in person (I met him online and we’ve been talking for 19 months now). I’m from the Philippines and I currently don’t have a job, I’m still a college student but I will be graduating soon. My boyfriend plans to sponsor my trip and we want to make sure we paln this right before we proceed to applying for a Canada visa. If you’re still reading this, a lot of you probably wonder why Canada? Why not in the US, or in the Philippines?

I got denied a US tourist visa last September of 2018 mainly because of lack proof of strong ties with my country, but I’m also aware that wasn’t the only reason for my refusal given that I don’t make income which was a red flag. My boyfriend couldn’t come to visit me as he’s still working on his passport which is taking so long because he’s currently dealing with court issues. He plans to go to Canada to see me for four weeks (and marry — Canada allows foreign marriage) because that’s the closest country where he can travel by land and cross the border without needing a passport.

I’m very much aware that money is a very important factor here but I for now want to know whether travel history to my neighboring countries can raise my chance or not? I have this idea to fly to Singapore or Taiwan but I’m not sure they put stamps on passport. Also I would like to know your insights and perhaps kindly suggest me what to do, and thank you.

I apologize for my long essay and I appreciate you for reading.

Your chances of being approved for a TRV are close to nil unfortunately. To be approved, you must show strong ties to your home country. Given your age and the fact you are unemployed (no income), you can't demonstrate strong ties. Your US visa refusal will also work against you. So will the fact that you don't have a strong travel history and have low savings/assets. IRCC wants to see that you have your own funds and can sponsor your own trip.

Travel history to your neighbouring countries will not increase your chances. IRCC is looking for past travel to countries requiring visas such as the US and UK.

I would recommend that your boyfriend focus on resolving his court issues so that he can obtain a passport and visit you instead.
