Hi,

I have an 11 year old boy from Japan staying with me. I am his guardian and he will be attending a local school during his stay. He has a visitors visa for 6 months but his parents want him to stay for 8. I was planning on renewing his visa by making a trip down to the States. Can you see any problems with doing this? What do you recommend?

Thanks for your advice!

Was he approved to go to school because I saw a TV program about a family who came on a tourist visa trying to get a work permit later and their kid was denied entry to school because they were on a tourist visa?

The proper permit to apply for in this case would be study permit for a minor, see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-minors.asp

He's only going to attend school for 6 months and he doesn't need a student visa for that (he's already attending the school). I'm just concerned about how I can go about renewing his visa at the 6 month point.

Just send in a request to extend his visa shortly before it's up. That will give him implied status while the request is being processed. By the time they finish processing, he's probably already gone home.

It should be this one: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/visitor.asp
