Visa for Canada and US

My son is (16years) is doing a school exchange. His flight is booked from Cape Town, South Afica via Istanbul to New York. From New York he has a connectng flight to Toronto.

My questions:
1. Does he need a Transit Visa for the USA, and if not, what type of visa?
2. What type of Visa do we apply for his visit in Canada - he'll be there for 8 weeks, as part of the family and attending school with his exchange student (who has already spent 8 weeks with us!).

Yes, and we have all the documentation of the exchange as well.

He needs a visit visa (TRV) to enter Canada:

I don't know the US requirements.

He needs a visitor visa for Canada and a Transit visa for the US.
