Hi,

My mom visiting us and her visa will expire in 2 months. Can we apply for extension since she is in Canada now? should she go to another country and re-enter to Canada again. In addition, her origin passport will expire in 2 months. Is there any way to get visa fro her while her passport getting expire at the same time with her visa?

Thanks,

She needs to first have a valid passport for the requested extension period. CIC won't grant an extension of status beyond the validity of her travel document (passport).

Once you have the passport then you can apply for a visitor extension.

Thanks for your answer. My father has almost same situation but he is not in Canada yet. It means his passport and visa will expire in 6 months. he wants to come to Canada 3 months later. Next month, he wants to change his passport before coming to Canada (Visa will expire in 6 months). Can he use his visa which is in old passport and come to Canada with new passport (the visa is not in the same passport when he checks in). If so, after entering to Canada, can he apply to get a new visa on his new passport. Any other solution or suggestion?

Hey there,

As far as I know, you won't be able to use your new passport to enter Canada while your valid visa is in the old passport. This is because your visa will have the passport number of the passport you used to apply for your visa. Most likely your father will have to reapply visa with the new passport.

As for your mother's situation, she'd need to renew her passport first and after that apply for her visa. CIC will not grant any visa when her passport is going to expire soon. That was what I did last time. I went to my embassy since I'm already in Canada, and got my passport renewed. Then with my new passport, I applied for my visa extension.

I hope this helps!

This topic came up before. Visas are valid in the old passport as long as you have a valid passport.
