I have hired a lawyer already for the Spousal sponsorship before getting married just to have everything done by the wedding. But now I learned it might take 6-8 months for the marriage certificate in Vietnam. Is this true or should i get a different lawyer there?

Your lawyer can't help you with the marriage certificate in Vietnam. You have to be there to apply and it should take about 5 weeks for the certificate. Unless you are referring to the Single Status document, your lawyer can assist you in obtaining that document here in Canada. That document took about 2- 3 months to get when I did it in 2010.

The lawyer is in Vietnam and he said 6-8 months and around 1800usd. Now its starting to sound a little fishy. Everywhere else i have read has said around 5 weeks. Does anybody know a good lawyer in Ho Chi Minh city

You don't need a lawyer for this process. Ask you wife to go to Sở Tư pháp, they should be able to tell her what's required to obtain a marriage certificate. Just remember that you will need to be in Vietnam for this step, they will interview you and your wife. Both of you have to be there to sign the certificate at the end.

You definitely don't need to pay $1800 for this process. It cost less then a couple of hundred to do it yourself.

IN case you guys don't know, Vietnam has passed a law where both parties do not have to show up at the same time to start the marriage certificate process, only one of you needs to be present, however, both parties need to be present during the interview process/signing. Also, they've eliminated the process where your marriage is publicly posted, which will save you a week total in processing time, so you can expect to get your marriage certificate in 3 weeks, from start to finish, instead of 4 weeks.

PS: Thanks for letting me know the Single Status doc takes 2-3 months to get, because I thought it only takes like 30 min for them to print it off the computer. I'll definitely make sure I get this stuff done on time before I marry.

Marriage certificate in vietnam is very quick for mine in June 2012 in Ben Tre. Took like 2 weeks. We had to have a brief interview before the certificate, but was very easy. Your lawyer in vietnam is trying to scam you, dont trust lawyerss in VN, they are all crooks. You do need a single status declaration and a medical examination, they want to know that you are mentally sane to marry, Lol, no joke. I had to do all these stuffs. The single status declaration takes a month or so to do here in canada. I had a viet travel agency help do mine for about $500 or so, could be less, i forgot. Also ask notary public agencies. you can do your mental examination in vn, it is very cheap and easy, unless youre not mentally fit, Lol.all forgeiners who wish to marry a viet citizen person, has to do this examination. Any questions you can ask me, i try to help. I know it is a headache. Good luck.
