Hi everone. Post covid, I am planning to bring a family member to Canada. The fam member has Canadian visa but the 6 month thing is of course a concern. I understand visitor visa extensions are possible but I think they cost $100 each time. I am wondering if leaving Canada and entering US for a visit and then re entering Canada will renew the 6 month stay period. Any expert edvice?

This is referred to as flagpoling and is frowned upon by CBSA since they sometimes view it as abuse of the visa process. Higher change of approval if you pay the $100 and apply for an extension within Canada. Higher change of issues / refusal if you cheap out and try to flagpole. Pay the $100 and avoid problems.

Are you aware if I can continue to flagpole for a good while and maybe extend the stay till 2 years? I am aware of the Supervisa option but covid 19 has caused me to get laid off and affected my income plans so i am looking into that option for next year.

On the other side, I have read posts where I can pay 100$ and probably get an extension for 2 more times bringing the total visit duration to 1.5 years.

First of all, right now you cannot flagpole at all due to COVID-19 border restrictions.

Secondly, per my response above, flagpoling is risky and puts you at higher risk for a refused re-enter to Canada. You would be better off applying within Canada and spending the $100. No - you won't get a 2 year extension. Best case you should expect six months.

How many times you get an extension approved is impossible for any of us to guess. This will be entirely up to IRCC.

Thank you. Yes, in a single extension, the max that can be offered is 6 months. I was wondering if i can extend it 3 times in total after the initial entry to extend the entire visit to a total of 2 years but you answered that question too, which is, it is entirely upon IRCC to make that deicison. Thank you for your valuable responses. :)
