Hello all I am from NY and I married a Canadian citizen. I do get lost in all the reading involved with this process. Can anyone give me the place to start and any tips.

Place to start! :-) read the first part of Leon post called "spousal sponsorship" - mostly the first page of the thread, it will give you an overview.
Then go to CIC here and download the guideline for outland applications here http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse.asp + the specific instructions for US applicants...follow the link for outland applications, print it, read it, (pull your hair out - that's optional!), and start gathering proofs... it takes a while, but it all makes sense after a while, and there are a lot of US/Can couples on the forum who can help with US related questions.
Good luck,
Sweden

I was reading and it says you can't be bankrupt .... does that mean have no money or you have applied for bankruptcy anyone know ?

The sponsor can't be in a current bankrupcty case. If the bankruptcy has been discharged, he/she can sponsor.

If you're also broke, you can sponsor as long as you aren't on social assistance (welfare).

Give this a read: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/3900ETOC.asp#3900E2
