US citizen, study permit expired, overstaying, become legit with visitor visa?

I was finishing some courses at Uni, and had to stay another term to finish off my program. In that time, my study permit has expired as of late May 2012. I was wondering if it is possible for me to leave Canada and come back on a visitor's visa with my US passport. I wish to see my friends graduate and complete their coursework before heading back to the US to get a job. What is your advice?

I noticed there's a way to do Restoration of Status within 90 days of the study permit being expired. Mine expired on May 31, 2012. The thing is that I was registered for a single course in summer term since May 7, 2012, to June 15, 2012. Basically 15 days of illegal studying. Will this be a problem when I try to apply for Restoration of Status of my study permit?
