Me and my wife are staying in Toronto on PR but my kids are US born and are on visitor status. Their initial 6 months of visitor status grant expires in July. Do I need to apply for visitor status extension? The PR (family class sponsorship) is underway and will take some time for approval

Yes, you need to apply to extend their stay as visitors.

Thanks.. Can re-entering at the border be an option to avoid the hassle of extension from inland?

as long as you can provide significant proof they intend to go back to the US at the end of their stay. One of the major concerns is overstaying. Applying for an extension is easier, and there's little chance of rejection if a pr application is in process. The cost is $100, and extensions are recommended to apply about 30 days prior to end of visit. Extensions can be applied online.

is there an application in process for them to be PR? Were they not included in the originaly applicaiton for PR?

As the minor children of PRs living in Canada, with a PR app in process, the border officer is not going to ask them to prove ties to the US.
