You can carry a combination of the two. POF is very rarely asked for at time of landing, but it is good to be prepared. An easier way would be to carry a forex card. Try a service like BookMyForex or similar, but they tend to be a bit expensive.
Personally I carried a few thousand in cash, and the rest as Bank Statements.
Alternatively, open a bank account In Canada, and transfer funds before travelling. Many Canadian banks like RBC, ScotiaBank, TD allow you to open an account and transfer funds before arriving. The account will be deposit only till you arrive and activate it by visiting a branch.
