The system (mycic) can't find me to let me sign up and apply for an extension online.

My record expires Dec 26 2011 (21 days from now). Which is why I was going to apply online instead of by mail as I see recommended everywhere.

Can I apply by mail, will it get there in time to get into the system so I don't get into trouble for overstaying?

Use a courier with a "signed for" delivery option, it will be ok.

Send it by mail and make sure it is postmarked and received before your status expires (they recommend applying a month before expiration but it is not a requirement) so definitely follow Baloo's advice and require a signature at delivery. It will take a little longer to process (I'm not sure why... it might just be volume), but you will have implied status while you wait for their decision.

Thank you!!! I busted butt this morning and got the application and proofs sent off as quick as we could (rural Alberta, only Canada Post available) with signature required. It should be there by thursday!

I also have terrible problems logging on to the CIC website. I get to the user agreement then it tells me the page is busy or has techincal problems.

I solved this by using a different computer. I have a lower end (but new) laptop that has wireless internet. When I need to use CIC, I use my boyfriend's top of the line desktop. I'm not sure if its my computer or the wireless or a combination of both. If you have the option, try another (secure) computer. Now if I could just get CIC to answer the phone....

Good luck!
