Hi Everyone,

I am seeking some advice on what to do regarding my current situation.

My partner is a Canadian Permanent Resident, originally from the UK. His parents applied for him to go with them as they have family over there and he came in under a Dependent of his sponsored family member and parents. We met just months before the Permanent Residency was accepted and he had to leave for Canada. I waited behind and 5 months later I then went to Canada to spend some time with him. We decided that he would return with me and we have currently been here since August 2016. I am aware of the time limit that has been put upon him (2 in 5 years to be spent within Canada, and time to be made up there after). So we have made the decision that he would like to return to his Family in Canada and I would like to follow. I have a trade and could possibly enter as an Express Entrant.

A few months back we decided to make things official and so a wedding is soon to be. My question is that, if he as a dependent entered Canada on those terms - does marrying myself now mean his Canadian PR would be revoked or would he be in violation of his PR?

I ask as I do not wish to put his PR at risk, and I would like to make sure I do not break any laws.

I would greatly appreciate your feedback, and I apologize if this is in the wrong category.

Thanks guys!

No risk at all. Carry on and be happy together. As he's a PR, if he is living in Canada, he can sponsor you under Family Class as soon as you are married.

He obtained his permanent residency under the fact that he is a dependent upon his parents. But once we are married he will then be legally dependent on myself - does this breach the terms of his residency?

Also, we are getting married in the UK.

As explained by the poster above, his marriage to you doesn't change or jeopardize his PR status in any way. Since he is a PR, he will need to be in Canada in order to submit the application to sponsor you and will need to continue living in Canada while the application is being processed. Where you are married doesn't really impact the application in any way.
