URGENT: Advanced standing resulted in part time status

Hi! My brother is enrolled in a program in Ontario. He applied for advanced standing in two courses which was approved. Now, they're saying that this will result in him becoming a part time student. Has anyone dealt with a scenario like this or does anyone know someone who has? Today was the last day of adding courses, so he can't go back and add courses to this semester.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If you are a part time student during your last semester, this won't be a problem.

If you are a part time student at any other time or for longer than just your last semester, this will most likely impact your ability to get a PGWP (you must be a full time student to qualify for a PGWP).

Your brother should take additional courses (even if he doesn't need them for his program) to make sure he keeps his full time status as a student.

If it's too late to add courses to this semester, then it sounds like there's really nothing he can do about the situation.

Do the community colleges not have the ability to over-ride the add/drop course functionality in their systems?

I have no idea. Your brother will have to ask his college since each school has its own rules. Generally there is a date after which it is no longer possible to start a new class (usually somewhere around 3-4 weeks after classes begin). Maybe your brother has now passed this date. Again, he will have to talk to his school further.

Just to let you guys know. He went to the college and spoke with someone at the registrar's office. His last date to add courses as per the calendar was 14th september, but the registrar was able to override the system and add a course for him to make him a full time student.

What must be noted here is that he added one of the courses that he had applied credit for. He had been attending those classes for two weeks because his advanced standing wasn't applied. So, technically he didn't miss any classes. The course got dropped yesterday and that's when they realized he will become a part time student. The co-ordinator was willing to give a written approval if required by the registrar. But the registrar didn't ask for it and added the course.

So everything's now resolved.

Thanks for your responses! Good luck!
