Although it could be a matter of personal preference I did like to say wait diligently and keep yourself up to date with your application.

I've been wondering about this as well. Doing your medicals upfront would definitely speed up the process, but then it might also be a waste of time and money, if the VO isn't even considering you in the first place and just stacks your application with the rest of the rejections.
