Hello friends,

I have an offer of admission to the MSc sustainable energy development at Uni of Calgary. Would deeply appreciate if anyone could give some advice regarding the following:

1) How is the reputation of the course and university in canada? Do employers look favorably upon it? My main priority is to find a job after graduation.

2) I also applied for the MEng mechanical engineering at Uni of Toronto and Waterloo. (I have a BEng Mechanical engineering from Singapore). In terms of employment prospects, how do these compare to the MSc sustainable energy development? These programs have a fall start, so I can only expect application results come the end of march. The sustainable energy development course starts in may though, so I cannot wait too long to make a decision.

Thank you for your time.

Congrats on your admission!

In my experience as an international student in Canada, getting a job may partly depends on your network while studying. For example, if your potential supervisor has industry collaboration, you may do some work for as a research assistantship and end up being hired after your studies. Go to conferences and workshops, you may be lucky to meet potential admirers who will be happy to work with you. Of course you can make applications to several openings too - casting your bread upon several waters - lucky you Canada is a country with many waters :-).

Toronto seems to be the one with highest ranking so if you are crazy with ranking go for that. I would imagine you have better opportunities to apply to several places in Toronto than Calgary. MSc Sus Energy Dev to me seems to be more appealing in Calgary because of oil producing there, but check with the economy if it's rising again. I know there were issues with oil and gas stuff last year - and people in that field had to be retrenched or something...

In terms of course comparison, people in the house may share their views - I'm from Geography. From a geography perspective, I know I've come across a lot of adverts in say energy economics but I see a bias towards people from Enginnering.

That said, still see what people have to say.

In any case, Canada is a great country.

Lest I forget, another thing that may enhance your prospect is getting your permanent residency as soon as possible. In this vein, Ontario will be a better place to get a PR after your graduation but I think they have currently put an old on that so check...
Good luck.
