Hi! I'm in the middle of making an application to sponsor my spouse for immigration to Canada. While poking around online I learned that I may have an issue. I've been living out of the country off and on for the past few years, but never cut my residency ties to Canada. During those years my parents continued to file my income tax returns (with $0 income reported). We did this not knowing that foreign income needs to be declared also. Between 2007 and 2009 I did have income while living and working outside of Canada (nothing huge, though). My questions are:

1. How likely is this to "come up" when my sponsorship case is being reviewed?

2. How big of a problem is it likely to be? Although I didn't "officially" severe residency ties with Canada at the time, I did live the entire two-year period outside of Canada (easily provable with my passport).

3. If it is likely to be an issue, what can I do to mitigate it now?

4. Even if it's not likely to hinder me from sponsoring my wife for immigration, does anyone know the tax implications here? I realize this doesn't relate to immigration, but I thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone has knowledge about this.

If you wish to address it (make it right), file a T1-ADJ for the taxation years applicable. The form is online and it's easy to do. Then, EVEN if an immigration asks, you could say you have filed 'Adjusted T1's' accordingly.

Thank you! I'll start working on this.
