Unable to satisfy PR requirements

Hi I wish to know if there is any possibility of retaining PR if one is unable to satisfy residency requirements as one is unable to get a job in Canada and due to other compelling circumstances due to which the PR holder is required to be outside Canada. Anybody who faced similar circumstances and retained PR? Thoughts please.

Not due to work but depends on other circumstances and how long you have been in Canada during PR.
