Good day everyone.
Asking this question for someone.

She came in 3 weeks ago as an international student with a 4 years student visa. After she left country, her father died.
She is saying she couldnt concentrate and she doesnt know how she will be able to pay for her school fees. She is only eligible for 20 hours of work in a week. She cant survive on that without getting money from her father. (who is now dead)

If she stop going to school. What are the implications. Can she convert her study permit to full work permit.
Can she differ her admission.

What are the implications. She is confused

If she stops going to school, she will be out of status and has to leave the country. No, she cannot convert to a work permit, unless an employer sponsors her with a LMIA (which takes months).

So sorry for her father’s passing. She has only been in Canada for 3 weeks so she has few options. If she stops going to school, then her study permit is cancelled and she would be in Canada without status. She would need to change her status to visitor to remain in Canada.

She can’t convert to a work permit unless she finds an employer and gets a job offer. The employer pays $1k and files a LMIA and proves no Canadian or PR can do the job, only her. She waits for LMIA and then apply for a closed work permit. Process takes months and few employers go through the process.

She needs to talk to her school about options for deferral.

There is a provision for a destitute student but she has only been in the country for 3 weeks. Usually it is for a bank collapse or war. She would then be eligible to work more hours but she would still need to pay for her studies and living. It is temporary for a semester to get a handle on her financial situation. Most likely, She would need an interview.

Has she started attending school yet? If she has attended but has not been able to concentrate she is unlikely to be able to succeed. Has she looked at the refund policy for the school? If she has only started studying recently she will likely be able to get most of her funds back but the window to withdraw may be ending soon.

Realistically since she hasn’t really started her studies the best option and maybe the only option will be to return home. She could attend school in her home country and work towards immigration that way if she wants to immigrate to Canada. There are programs for students who find themselves destitute but that is usually after they have completely some schooling and only have a bit of schooling to complete. Given that her father has does I’m sure she will also want to return home and spend some time with her family.
