UK passport query

Hi all, looking at coming over to Canada next year and have a query regarding passport expiry.

Basically, I am looking at initially coming over on the IEC with the objective of switching over to a study permit and attending university in 2019, My problem is that my passport lasts until January 2021, this is sufficient for the IEC but means that it would expire halfway through my period of study.

Would it be possible to come over on my current passport and renew it while in Canada on the IEC before applying for the study permit, or will I have to get a new one before applying for the IEC?

Be aware UK passport renewals as far as I am aware are sent back to the UK for processing.

As with all applications for any permit or visa always best in my view to have a validity greater than the period you need although nothing to stop you applying during your IEC but before you apply for a study permit. When you land on the IEC then of course CBSA are only concerned about passport validity for IEC .

Assume maybe incorrectly from your post that IEC is future application for 2018 program, if so given your plan maybe avoid hassle and renew now. Even if you are in the 2017 program you can even renew your passport as long as you show the old one or photocopy of bio page your POE was issued against plus your new passport which the IEC will be transferred to on landing.

Personally not sure if you renew during IEC post landing if you need to tell anyone other than to ensure if you exit the country you have old with the permit attached and the new with you when you reenter.

I'm taking the view that I may as well put in an application on the tail end of this years IEC applications in the next week or so. Not necessarily expecting to get one as most permits have been issued by now, so in that scenario I'll be re-applying in November/December.

Good to know that I could apply now, and still renew the passport. It'll definitely be ok if I just take the old one along with me?
