What is this UCI and how to you get this number?

What is a UCI?

UCI stands for “unique client identifier.” It is also known as a client identification number (client ID). It appears on official documents you get from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). It has four numbers, a hyphen and four more numbers. (Example: 0000-0000).

Where can I find my client ID/UCI?

This eight digit number appears on all documents you get from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). It looks like this: 0000-0000.

If you applied to CIC before
Look for this number on:

letters you received from CIC,
your immigration document such as a PR card, study or work permit.
If you do not have any of these documents but want to fill out an application form:

you can leave the field for UCI (Client ID) blank.
Note: If you have not dealt with CIC since 1973, you will not have a UCI or a Client ID.

If you are applying to CIC for the first time
You will not yet have a client ID. If so, and you are filling out a form that asks for one, write “Not Applicable” or “N/A” in the space provided.

If you are applying online and the form does not allow you to input “N/A,” leave the space blank.

I am a Canadian born citizen and my wife and I are filing for the first time for her permanent residency so I guess that's why we don't have this number yet? So I'll just put N/A.

the sponsor's UCI will be on the sponsor approval email. The applicant's UCI will be on any requests received from the visa office. As an Ottawa appliant, i did not know mine until my passport request. Before PPR, I would use my sponsor's UCI to sign into ECAS.

yes, put n/a - this is for people who have already dealt with immigration before. a person's UCI will remain the same for every type of visa they are applying for.

Thanks for the replies. Also it's necessary to get the medicals done BEFORE sending the application right? We are going to get the medicals done on Thursday in Mexico City. I guess after doing the medical we should send the applications asap so as not to risk the validity of the medical results. You have 12 months of validity on them right?

it's not necessary to do them upfront. CIC will request them in the sponsor approval letter. Yes, they are valid for 12 months. CIC also has the ability to extend them in order to get the applicant through landing.

If you're sending it in close to your appointment, then send it in. If you don't have the money for it now, then wait until it's requested. it's up to you. waiting for it to be requested has not resulted in noticable delays for applicants.

Then why does the checklist say you have to submit proof of medical examination with the application?

who knows. they probably rather not to have to request it. while it's required for the PROCESS, it's not necessarily required for submission. Mississauga deals with the sponsor, not the applicant. It's not requested until after the sponsor is evaluated, and is not a reason why an application is deemed "incomplete". The system has also changed to electronic, so that may account for the leniency? *why* is really anyone's guess!

There are many applicants who wait for it to be requested, and have not experienced issues. A recent US applicant submitted it when requested and landed in 5 months!

You really should have them completed up front. It will save you that much more time that CIC won't have to request information from you, then shelf your file for 45 or 60 days waiting for your information. Just do them up front and deal with having to repeat them later if necessary, but most of the time, a re-medical is not necessary.

see, this isn't exactly happening to outland ottawa applicants. I believe Zarilenth waited to submit, and still landed in 5 months, and there are others with similiar stories. At least for Ottawa, they seem to process some requests as soon as they are received, and don't necessarily follow the "bring forward date" approach. Just take a look at the ottawa spreadsheet to see the latest trends. if the medical is received after SA, there doesn't seem to be a serious delay. Obviously it's dependant on the visa office and officer, so it may not be true for all locations.

You are correct, they don't always follow the 'bring forward' dates, however, would you want to gamble that your VO won't based on what others have or have not done? If you look at the 2012 thread (where I was) we all pretty much submitted our medicals/pcc's with our initial applications. Take a look at the spreadsheet. No requests made, and we even went through an 8 month strike. If you look at the 2013 thread , inlanders, btw, they are all now still trying to get aip/dm set up. They think it is all due to the office transfer, and I am not so sure that is all there is to it. Majority of them did not do upfront medicals, did not submit PCC, but waited until they were requested. I know everyone has ideas about how best it works, but I see it trending more toward don't give it to em until they ask and it seems to be taking longer to process each step for all the people that don't follow what the directions say.

Just my opinion based on what I have read/seen and how things are going for those who didn't follow the same path as those previous to them. The directions clearly state Medicals and PCC is to be sent upfront with the application, with the rare exception of some locals that you MUST have the request from CIC to do this. If you don't, it is entirely possible that your application could be sent back as incomplete. I would risk absolutely nothing on something as important as this.
