Hi,
Last week my bf was approved for a 6 month multiple entry TRP from the Consulate, however upon arriving at the POE, the border officer voided that decision and granted him a 1 day TRP, and said if we can provide him further information regarding his possession charge (from 15 years ago) he may consider granting him a TRP for 1 month. How can they do that? The Consulate approved him for 6 months...and with no new info and no good reason the border officer decided to over ride that and allow him entry for 1 day?!?!? I am beyond devastated and frustrated!! Is there no recourse for us? Is there anyone I can talk to or appeal to? I feel like its too late already as the decision has already been made at the POE. But seriously to go from 6 months approval to 1 day...that's absurd!!
Anyone have any insight or advice....much appreciated

The 6 months is how long the TRP is valid for (i.e. length of visa validity) - it's not how long your bf is allowed into Canada. How long someone is allowed into Canada is determined at the border by CBSA. Someone could be holding a 10 year multiple entry TRV but only be allowed into the country for a day. The length of the visa validity does not determine or guarantee how long a stay in Canada someone will get. I would recommend your bf stick with the day he was allowed and then return for a visit later with the additional paperwork requested.

In response to the question about "recourse", not really. CBSA are tasked with control of the border and what they decide to do with an incoming foreign national is very much up to the CBSA officer at the POE. They are not bound by the decision of a visa officer abroad, although obviously they will normally accept it. The CBSA officer is the one actually standing in front of the applicant and may form a completely different impression of the applicant’s demeanour.

Thanks guys.
I do understand it's ultimately up to the officer at the POE, just really frustrating :(

I feel your frustration and it does suck, but that is how it is... CBSA is tasked with protecting the Canadian boarder and when a visitor presents themselves for inspection, the officer can decide against a decision by a consular officer...
Only Canadian citizens and permanent residents have a RIGHT to enter Canada....
