Hi, I am a South African currently on a Temporary Resident Visa (still valid for 6 years). I recently got married to a Canadian and are currently living in Canada. We have submitted our Spouse sponsorship application. My question is am I allowed to leave the country before the outcome of the application, and if so, will I still have a valid TRV? I have read somewhere someone wrote when they left the country it automatically cancelled their TRV status and in some cases people were not allowed back into Canada. Is this true?

Others can comment as well but if you have applied with an inland application the general advice is to not leave the country whilst the application is in process.

The reason being that travelling on a TRV there is never any guarantee of being allowed back into the country, no way to predict. If not allowed back in for whatever reason then the PR application would be considered adandoned.

Expect a lot of people do travel out and back without any issue so is just a matter of being aware of the potential consequences which is why many people apply through Outland applications even if applying from within Canada given an Outland application is managed differently by IRCC by assuming someone is in or outside of the country.

Your TRV by the way is valid right upto the point you land as a PR after which it becomes void.
