Hello all!

I am scheduled to take my oath Feb 4 but need to travel Feb 6th. I just read you must destroy your PR card during the ceremony.
Will I receive documentation as proof of citizenship to return to Canada?

Also I haven’t received an invite yet, I only saw on the status checker I was scheduled to take the oath on Feb 4th…my status was updated January 17th but no intive or details on the 20th. Is it normal for a gap between the update and getting the invite? I’ve checked my junk folders etc.

Any help much appreciated!
David

Where are you going?

The citizenship certificate will be mailed to you after the ceremony. However you can't use this to board a plane to return to Canada. You need a passport to do that.

Thank you Scylla!
I am going to the Bahamas. Do you know if it is possible to reschedule the ceremony? Can I not return on my Irish passport?

Yes, you can reschedule the oath ceremony. However note that you may be waiting months for a new date.

No, you cannot return to Canada directly on your Irish passport. The only option is to fly to the US on your return home and then to re-enter Canada through a US/Canada land border using a private vehicle.

Hey again Scylla!

One more question...
The land boarder is not really an option.
Do you know about getting a 'special authorization' to re enter Canada? could I apply for that or apply for my passport from abroad?
Thanks again!

How long will you be outside of Canada?

My Oath is on the 4th I am scheduled to leave 6th and return on the 16th. So 10 days
There's no way you have time to obtain a Canadian passport from outside of Canada or any other kind of authorization to travel. The mailing of the citizenship certificate after the oath alone can take many weeks (you need the certificate to apply for a passport). You have two options:

1) Postpone your oath
2) Postpone your trip

hey sorry just found this about getting a 'special authorization' on - https://secure.cic.gc.ca/dc-dn/dcc-eng.aspx

'
You can use this form if you:

  • have a flight to Canada that leaves in less than 10 days,
  • have a valid passport from a visa-exempt country,
And:

  • have previously received a certificate of Canadian citizenship, or
  • held a Canadian passport in the past, or
  • you were granted Canadian citizenship after having been a permanent resident of Canada.

Why do you say I wouldn't have enough time?

You would need to receive and have your certificate of Canadian citizenship in order for this to be possible.

We've had people wait 6-8 weeks on this forum after the oath to receive theirs.

I mean, you can roll the dice and try. But you need to be prepared to potentially get stuck in the Bahamas for a number of weeks longer than planned. If you are OK with that, then I don't see an issue in going ahead with both the trip and oath.
