Hi All,

I have a marriage certificate in Greek and then officially translated into English. CIC say the below:

If a supporting document is in a language other than English or French, the applicant must provide IRCC with:
•the English or French translation; and
•an affidavit from the person who completed the translations; and
•a certified photocopy of the original document.

I have both the original and translated, stamped both and signed etc, but what should I get the translator to put in letter/affidavit? any format needed?

also forgot to mention, the translated copy is stamped and signed by the translator, but also then stamped and signed by the local authority in Greece stating it is a true translation of the original. I also have a written statement by the translator which states that she swears that it is a true translation and all her details etc, signed and dated.

The affidavit is the written statement by the translator as you have mentioned so you are good to go. You need nothing more, and translation is now complete. Good luck..

In that case the cycle will go on and never ends. I need another witness to sign that he has witnessed the witness .. You know the equation gets complex.

The affidavit is a piece of document where the undersigned under oath is declaring that the translation is correct along with their designation and credentials. This document is of legal value and a person signing such a document can be tried in any court !!

Before closing my thread, I am pasting this piece of information from CIC :

I hope your doubts are clarified, unless you are looking for someone who says that it is not enough .. Good luck

"An affidavit for a translation is a document stating that the translation is a true and accurate version of the original text. The translator swears in front of a commissioner authorized to administer oaths in the country where the translator lives, that the contents of their translation are a true translation and representation of the contents of the original document."

Because you did not use a Canadian certified translator, you do need to get the affidavit. Yes, this must be signed in front of a commissioner of oaths (or the equivalent in that particular country).

It doesn't have to be this exact format, this is just one example, you can google "translator's affidavit" and find many examples...
