Hi folks,
I'm a Canadian citizen. We (my family and I) will be paying tuition and living expenses for a very close friend from China to help her get a study permit to come to Canada.
We've been close friends for 3 years, but the real reason behind this is because she saved my life in a near-death experience. I wouldn't be here today if it was not for her bravery and quick-thinking. My family and I are very grateful for what she did, and have decided to help her in trying to get a Canadian educational experience to boost her job prospects in China, since she does not have much of a career path or funds of her own.
I know it is usually difficult for those without strong economic ties coming from China to get approved, but I'm hoping that with evidence that my family and I are paying for her stay here, plus our guarantee that she will leave at the end of her studies (she will be staying with us, and obviously we would not want to harbour an illegal immigrant), it will be enough for the visa officer to approve her application.
Does anybody have any tips on how to increase chances for approval? A few more specific questions:
1) I heard applicants are unlikely to get approved for just an ESL program and the chances are much higher with a conditional acceptance to a different program upon completing ESL. Is this true?
2) If so, what programs "look good" to immigration officers? She would be going to a college like George Brown or Humber, assuming she gets in
3) This raises the question: Any experience on what average marks you need from a Chinese high school to get in to programs at these schools? I couldn't find information online and the schools don't do per-assessments.
4) Would it be enough for us to show financial ability and willingness to pay for her expenses? Would it increase her chances for us to arrange for a line of credit for her (with us as the cosigners), or is this unnecessary/ill-advised since we undertake to pay her expenses and provide room & board anyways?
Thanks!
