My husband (who i am sponsoring for out of country(American)) just received his letter saying he needs to bring in his passport to get his visa (PR card). Just wondering is there a timeline that he needs to move to canada after he gets his PR? I figure he needs at least a month or two to get his things in order.. his work would like a months notice and also his condo that he rents, plus he has afew financial things he would like to clear up before he moves here permanently. I understand he needs to live here two full years out of five, that wont be an issue, but in the short term.. i did read something that he is not allowed to be out of Canada for over 30 days in the first 180ish? Any help to clear this up would be greatly appreciated!

The PR visa is usually valid as long as his medicals. His medicals are valid for a year after he got them but it will say on the PR visa. He will have to land in Canada before the PR visa expires. After that, he can leave again and will only have to meet the residency requirements of 2 out of every 5 years like everybody else.

Leon! Thankyou so very much for the instant reply to my question! He has 3 months to move then (had his medical last May). That is great news for us, now he doesn't have to rush like a madman to get things settled!! He has to submit his passport to the Office in Buffalo (before March 2nd). He has decided to come to visit me and at the same time bring his passport in person and get his PR Visa done. I guess it's best he bring a list of his personal belongings that he will be bringing to Canada when he moves.

He will be flying into Buffalo on Sunday night, and i'll be picking him up as usual. When we cross back into Canada, should I say something to the guard that he is going for his PR VISA on Tues (Buffalo Visa office hours are only Tues and Thurs mornings).
Also not sure what 'Landing" means or when that happens?. Do I show the border guard his list of personal belongings that will follow or does that need to be handed in at the Buffalo Office? Just abit confused.... ty for your patience

If he has his PR visa at the time he goes to Canada to visit, he should tell them when he crosses the border that he is landing as a PR. They will do some extra paperwork for that, takes a few minutes, he will get his confirmation of landing and will already be a PR. He can give your address to get the PR card mailed to.

He should have a "goods to follow" list for the stuff he is planning on bringing later along with serial numbers of things that have one and approximate value for what it would go for at a flea market.

All I can say is THANK YOU for your information. I wish I had come across this site at the beginning of my journey rather than near the end! I wish you the best. And everyone else who is starting, in the middle process and those that are complete, best wishes!
