do you need to have known your spouse or been in a relationship for a certain period of time, for them to accept it

No - there is no minimum time.

However the shorter the relationship, the more evidence I would include to prove the relationship is genuine.

I only knew my wife 7 months before we married and I suspect thats a big reason why she's on the interview list. 6 months of telephone/email and 1 month in person, that is. On the other hand I know of others who knew each other much less time and they didnt have to go through an interview. One of those couples were an arranged marriage however.

I asked a local CIC rep about this and she said that it would definitely draw their attention.

Some traditional family arranged marriages (like muslim ones) get married on the first meeting without courtship or dating. This is because pre-marriage (or extra-marriage) relationships are not acceptable and the relationship typically starts after marriage declaration. I wonder how the CIC looks at these. I think they know these things but you know to provide overwhelming evidences. The CIC cannot use the criteria of courtship on judging on these relationships.

Therefore, length of courtship is variable and depends on your country/origin. Your individual circumstance are other controlling factors.

If the courtship is short, you have to defend this on your statement and make sure that you overcome this point by other strong evidences.
